San Gerardo de Rivas is not just the base for climbing Chirripó... it's much more. And if you're looking for a place to connect with nature, go hiking, and be surprised at every step, Talamanca Nature Reserve is a hidden gem you have to discover. Cloud forests, waterfalls, pools, viewpoints, and over 35 km of trails await you in this mountain paradise. 🏞️

🥾 Our Experience: Among Birds, Waterfalls, and Views from Another World

We left with few expectations... and ended up amazed. We left on Friday night for San Gerardo de Rivas to make the most of the weekend and rest away from the noise.

🌄 Day 1: Endless Trails and a Window in the Mountain

We woke up in a cozy cabin within Talamanca Nature Reserve, surrounded by cloud forest and bird song. Early in the morning, we went for a walk in the gardens, teeming with life, and by 7:30 a.m. we headed to the restaurant for breakfast. The food was delicious, and while we ate, we saw dozens of birds flitting among the flowers 🐦🌺.

With our stomachs full, we learned more about the place and were told it has 1,600 hectares with at least 7 different trails, all with varying levels of difficulty. It was a challenge! 😱

Since we were with Leo and wanted to make the most of the day, they offered us a horseback ride to get to one of the longer trails. It's not included, but it's super useful if you're short on time. After almost an hour on horseback, we arrived at the end of the trail and that's where the tough part began: 1 km uphill to the viewpoint. 💪

We arrived sweaty but happy at the viewpoint: a window in the mountain, with benches to sit and see the horizon in silence. We took out our sandwiches, rested for a long time, chatted, and simply enjoyed being there… 🌬️

💧 Iggy's Waterfall: Crystal-Clear Water and Peace

After we rested for a bit, we prepared to visit Iggy's Waterfall at around 3:30 p.m. It was late in the afternoon, so we were a bit rushed. Again, they gave us a horseback ride to the closest point, and in 30 minutes we were in front of an impressive waterfall, surrounded by lush vegetation. 🌿

You can't swim there, but there's a comfortable spot to sit and contemplate the water. It was the perfect ending to a super active day. We returned just as night was falling, straight to dinner... and wow: the food was a 10/10! 🍽️✨

💦 Day 2: Secret Pool by the River

On Sunday, we decided to take it easy. We went for a walk along a trail by the river and after about 2 km, we came across a crystal-clear pool. The water was icy, but perfect for refreshing the soul. We spent some time in the water, splashing around, and felt our bodies come alive. 🧊💙

After enjoying ourselves for a long time, we headed back for lunch and then left for San José with our hearts full.

Talamanca Nature Reserve is the perfect place to train for Chirripó, reconnect with the mountain, and spend an epic weekend among trails, pools, birds, and plenty of silence. 🌲🔥
