Agujas – Bijagual: Kayak, Waterfall and Sunset Adventure 🔥
A different kind of getaway in the Central Pacific
When we think of Costa Rica’s Central Pacific, what usually comes to mind is a day in Punta Leona, Hermosa, Jacó or Herradura. But this time, we went for something different — QueBuenLugar style — and discovered a hidden gem between Agujas and Bijagual: a plan that includes kayaking, a stunning waterfall and a sunset to remember.

First stop: Kayaking at Playa Agujas
We left early via Route 27 straight to Playa Agujas, where we found our meeting point at Kayak Jacó. They gave us some basic recommendations and off we went, paddle in hand and ready for adventure.
The calm waters in the area are perfect for kayaking along a rocky cliff covered in jungle. After about 45 minutes, we arrived at a nearly private beach before Punta Leona — a beautiful spot called Playa Limoncito.
Snorkeling by the reef
With great weather on our side, we geared up for snorkeling next to a reef teeming with life. We saw starfish and countless fish that left us amazed. After finishing our snorkeling session, we returned to shore and enjoyed a snack of fresh fruit and cold water, just what we needed before heading back.
Waterfall time: Manantial Aguas de Vida
After the kayak tour, we grabbed lunch near Playa Agujas and made our way to the second adventure: one of the highest waterfalls in the country, hidden in Bijagual de Turrubares.
To get there, we took a steep dirt road marked on Waze. At the entrance, there's a sign that says Catarata, where we left the car under the supervision of the local caretaker.
From there, it’s a 2 km hike down a narrow forest trail that leads to the waterfall. This one stands at around 200 meters high. It’s not your typical free-fall cascade — the water spreads across a 15-meter-wide rock formation, slipping down to form a river. It's absolutely breathtaking!
Jungle hike with a bonus
The descent is fun, but the return is a bit more challenging due to the steep climb. On the way back, there are a few trails that lead to crystal-clear jungle pools perfect for a quick dip, some rest and snacks before continuing.
Close to the entrance, there are showers — much appreciated after a very sweaty and humid hike back uphill!
The perfect ending: Sunset at Playa Gaucailillo
To top off the day, we drove to Playa Gaucailillo and watched the sunset from a series of dramatic seaside cliffs. A perfect way to end our Agujas – Bijagual adventure.
