If you’re looking for a place to unplug without leaving the Central Valley, Jardín Botánico Lankester in Dulce Nombre de Cartago is a natural gem that has it ALL — beauty, science, great food, and wide open spaces to relax with the whole family. Part of the University of Costa Rica, this garden is open every day of the year and is one of those places you’ll want to come back to again and again.
From the moment we arrived, the place blew us away with how clean, well-kept, and beautiful it was — lush gardens and tons of green space to enjoy at your own pace.
We went with the whole family — kids, parents, siblings, grandparents — and we had an amazing time.
🌺 Japanese Garden & Orchid Conservation
One of the biggest highlights is the Japanese garden — the only one of its kind in Costa Rica — and it honestly feels like stepping into a movie: a peaceful lake, stone bridges, bamboo groves, a tea house, and the most photogenic spots you can imagine.
Jardín Lankester is also home to one of the world’s most important orchid collections, with over 1,000 specimens, many of which bloom between February and April. But it’s not just about pretty flowers — there’s serious science going on here, with vital conservation work to protect native biodiversity.
🌵 Themed Gardens, Forest Trails & More
Another favorite spot is the cactus and succulent garden, full of wild shapes and textures that are totally mesmerizing.
And if you’re into walking, there’s a trail that winds through the forest, perfect for soaking in the sounds of birds and nature while exploring the local flora.
There's also a pond with fish and aquatic plants, a calm, shady spot to sit, relax, and just let go.
🍴 Picnic, Grill & Chill
Feeling hungry? From Thursday to Sunday, they offer a grill service with covered tables, snacks, and drinks. Or if you’d rather bring your own food, no problem — there are plenty of grassy spots perfect for a picnic.

What makes this place even better is how accessible and pet-friendly it is (just follow the basic rules). Whether you’re going with toddlers or grandparents, everyone will enjoy it.
