We went to Guanacaste to the town of Curubandé to visit La Leona waterfall and its crystalline turquoise pools. Don't hesitate and take a hike to this spot.

How to get there?

Take the North Inter-American Route 1, and 10 minutes after passing Liberia, turn right towards Rincón de la Vieja, after passing the town of Curubande, turn left onto a ballast street where you will find the Rafas Adventures signs.

We arrived at around 8 am, where we ran into the infamous Mr Rafa (owner of the farm) and he quickly explained a little about the farm, its pools and the tour that they would give us to the La Leona waterfall.

Then our guide arrived, who very kindly led us along the shady path that goes upriver, on the way he showed us about 5 different pools, also all very well marked.

On the way we crossed the river about 4 times, passing through a stone canyon, caves and small waterfalls until we reached the entrance of the canyon that leads to La Leona waterfall… a really lovely place.

Here we left the things we did not want to get wet, we put cameras and cell phones in a drybag to jump into the water and swim (there is a rope to help you) against the current of the waterfall.

When we began to swim into the canyon, rays of sunlight illuminated the spray caused by the waterfall and the crystalline turquoise color of the water was something else.

The waterfall has a stone beach in front of it where one can be taking pictures (we recommend walking around with a towel to dry the camera or cell phone lens). There is also a nice pool to splash around for a little while and to take beautiful photos.

At the end, after bathing and having a blast, we went back to the parking lot where we left the car to change and return to San José, happy to have seen this great place.
